Protect Green Belt

For residents' groups

Keep watch over the green belt near you

Protect Green Belt gives your group its own campaign website. It checks the council's planning register every day, tells people when something that matters comes up, and gives your organisers the tools to do something about it.

What a campaign gets

Everything a residents' group needs to follow planning in its area and get people involved, ready to use. We set it up for you and keep it running.

  • A daily check of the planning register

Every morning we look through your council's new and changed planning applications, and pick out the ones that matter: new building in the green belt or on open land, not tree works or a new porch.

  • Email updates people choose themselves

Residents sign up on your site for the updates they want, as they happen, daily or weekly. Every email has a link to change or stop them.

  • Green spaces and proposals

A page for each field, wood or meadow you're protecting, and for each developer's scheme, with its documents, deadlines and what people can do.

  • A map of everything

Planning applications, proposals and green spaces on one map of your area, so people can see what's planned near them.

  • Help writing objections

Guidance that helps residents write their own comment to the council, in their own words, on the points that planning officers can take into account.

  • Meetings and notes

Plan meetings, keep notes and attendance, and share the public details. Photos of handwritten notes can be typed up for you.

  • Volunteers and councillors

A volunteer sign-up form, and a record of your local councillors and how they voted on the applications you follow.

  • An organiser team with its own sign-in

Your organisers sign in with a code sent by email: no passwords to forget. Admins decide who looks after which green space.

How it works

  1. Tell us about your group

Where the green belt or green space is, and which council decides planning there.

  2. We set up your site

We mark out your area on a map and choose what to look out for. You get a free address on protectgreenbelt.org.uk, or use your own domain.

  3. Your team takes it from there

Organisers sign in, add the green spaces and proposals you care about, and residents sign up for updates.

We're starting with councils whose planning register runs on the Idox system (about half of councils in England, including Cheshire West and Chester). If your council uses something else, tell us anyway: it helps us decide which to add next.
